Daycare or preschool: what’s the difference?

Both programs include learning and social development. The biggest difference is how that learning is delivered.

Daycare

  • Play-based learning throughout a longer day
  • Basic French exposure
  • Circle time and teacher-led activities
  • Social, fine motor and gross motor development
  • Some number recognition
  • More free play and outdoor time
  • Less emphasis on formal letter writing

Preschool

  • More concentrated school-readiness focus

  • Less time available for free play and outdoor activity
Monthly schedules vary with the calendar and holidays. Part-time daycare is defined as 50–99 hours per month. The daily equivalents above are only intended to help families visualize that amount of care. Actual scheduling is subject to program availability.

Before You Begin: A Few Important Details

Please note that our Preschool and Daycare programs operate annually from September through June. For program dates, holidays, and scheduled closures, please see our Daycare and Preschool calendars.

To Register, Your Child Must Be:

  1. Fully toilet trained before they start classes.

  2. Meeting our Age Requirements:

    • 3-Year-Old Class: Must be 3 years old on the day they start. (If they turn 3 after September, you can register to hold their spot, but tuition is required. Children turning 3 after December 31 are admitted at the teacher's discretion).

    • 4-Year-Old Class: Must turn 4 by December 31st, 2026 (e.g., to start in September 2026). If your child turns 4 early in the school year, we highly recommend this class.

Family Volunteer Commitment

As a non-profit, parent-run cooperative, every family’s participation is essential! Your commitment includes:

  • Helping with one toy wash (one evening or session per school year).

  • Helping with one rag wash.

  • Participating in our casino fundraiser (typically runs every second year).

A fee will be charged if these volunteer commitments are not met, as outlined in our Parent Handbook.

The Registration Process, Fees & Waitlists

How to Register

Our registration is managed through Brightwheel, our childcare management system. To get started:

  1. Click Here to create your free Brightwheel account.

  2. Complete the online registration form. This includes info about your child, yourself, and two emergency contacts (who live in Calgary).

Waitlist Procedures

On the registration form, you can select your 1st and 2nd choice for class times.

  • First Choice Available? You are automatically placed! Your card will be charged the $130 registration fee, and you'll receive a confirmation email.

  • First Choice Full? You will NOT be automatically put in your second choice. Instead, the registrar will email you within 7 days to:

    1. Offer you a spot in your second choice (which you can accept or decline).

    2. Ask if you’d like to join the waitlist for your first choice.

  • Both Choices Full (or only 1 choice listed and it's full)? You are AUTOMATICALLY added to the waitlist for your first choice.

Waitlist Rules

  • You can only be waitlisted for one class option at a time.

  • You may switch which class you are waitlisted for; your original priority date and time will be maintained.

  • When a spot opens, you will receive an email. You will have 7 days to complete the required documents and submit payment before the spot is offered to the next family on the list.
